Today's Exactly100: Whatever Happened to Words?

Technology has given us endless ways to connect. Yet here we are: young and old alike tossing out prayer hands, hearts, thumbs up, “amen,” “nice", "hahaha.” Feeds choke on “happy birthday,” “Merry xmas,” “condolence po.” Often, emojis, stickers or GIFs fill the void.

These shortcuts aren’t wrong — but they’re all that’s left. We've crippled our tongues with this lazy semaphore, no nuance, no real attempts to persuade, console and comfort, to plead, to share in the joy. Language carries longing, soothes grief, expresses our joy far better.
