I have been saddened by the observation of friends and colleagues of my young years who have lost teeth and hair, have grown fat and lazy, or have become indifferent, unproductive and impotent in middle age. This loss of ability or ‘prowess,’ if you might call it that, is devastating to sensitive individuals. (Hemingway shot himself because he felt he had diminished prowess.)
What is one to do in the face of such unfortunate reality? Many I know get on well enough to live unaffected by the vicissitudes of bodily decay or changing fortunes – quite happy to the very end. /mdm
