
Corded at first, hanging on the wall, we loved it when we could string it into another room. Then—voilà!—science cut the cord, and we roamed with it.
I was already alive when we had to call an operator, ask and wait for a dial tone, even beg the party line for a turn at the line.
We pleaded for it to ring. Now, we stare at it when it does. We ask to be texted first.
Today, we're advised not to take calls from numbers your phone does not recognize.
