We still do not know how Daniel Naroditsky died. Police are investigating, and considering suicide. While speculation helps no one, one truth endures: the chess world tolerated a public campaign of accusation and innuendo against a beloved player.

FIDE has referred Vladimir Kramnik’s statements to its Ethics and Disciplinary Commission.

Chess is no longer a world of old men; it is dominated by the young, gifted, and therefore vulnerable. The chess world is grieving. Grief seeks a why; justice a how. While we wait for the doctors to speak, let us do the work that honors the living: build guardrails. /Vincent Pozon
