The arrest of former president Rodrigo Duterte triggered a wave of toxic exchanges on social media. Suddenly we found ourselves in a time warp, back to a recent past when a freshly-minted regime of death and fear, aided by its troll army, defiled our social media feeds with toxicity, vitriol, misogyny; with death and rape threats.
Expectedly, there was pushback from the combined social media troops of the Marcos administration and “pinklawans,” authentic or otherwise. And in the exchange, impeached Vice President Sara Duterte was unscathed. She managed to smile her way back to the hearts of voters. How lucky. /Joey Salgado
